What is diabetic retinopathy?

The condition is caused by damage to the small blood vessels in the retina due to high blood sugar levels. This can lead to bleeding, fluid leaks, or the growth of abnormal new blood vessels within the eye.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch out for

In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. However, as the condition progresses, the following may occur:

  • Blurred or wavy vision

  • Black spots or “flies” in vision

  • Loss of central vision

  • Difficulty recognizing faces or reading

⚕️ Diagnosis & Treatment

Early diagnosis is made with specialized tests such as fundoscopy, OCT and fluorescein angiography.

Treatment depends on the stage of the disease and may include:

  • Injections of special drugs (anti-VEGF)

  • Laser photocoagulation

  • Surgical vitrectomy in advanced cases
