PANHELLENIC OPHTHALMOLOGY CONGRESS 2012
RESULTS OF 20 GAUGE VITRECTOMY WITH TROCAR WITHOUT SUTURES OF SECTIONS - 4 YEARS EXPERIENCE
Athens Naval Hospital
Purpose:
To assess the effectiveness and safety of 20 Gauge vitrectomy with trocar in eye diseases requiring treatment with vitrectomy.
Method:
The intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of 350 patients who underwent 20-gauge trocar vitrectomy without conjunctival opening and incisional suturing by a single posterior hemisphere surgeon were evaluated. Preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) and visual acuity (GO) were also assessed based on the Snellen chart. Patients were evaluated at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
No intraoperative complications due to trocar use were observed. The sclerotomy was sutured in 25 patients because a leak was found at the end of the operation. Preoperative OC was 1/10 on average. After 3 months the OO was measured at 5/10 on average. Preoperative IOP was 15mmHg +/- 2 (Goldmann applanation tonometry) while postoperative IOP on the first day was 11mmHg+/- 2 and 15mmHg +/- 2 on the seventh day. Hypotonia was observed in 10 patients on the first postoperative day but stabilized to normal levels without medication within one week. No postoperative endophthalmitis or retinal detachment was observed in any patient.
Conclusion:
20 Gauge vitrectomy with trocar is an effective and safe method for the treatment of eye diseases that require vitrectomy.
